The 5th National Competition in Storybook Writing, a prestigious event held in Davao City from November 21-23, 2023, showcased the literary talents of budding writers and illustrators across the Philippines. The event culminated in the Storybook Recognition Rites and Reading Exhibit, the highlight of the Gawad Teodora Alonso 2023.

Two outstanding writers from Divine Word College of San Jose, Hanna Joy M. Ocampo and Jenny A. Garcia, received the ReadEx Picks, Honorable Mention awards. Hanna Joy M. Ocampo's "Ang Superhero ng mga Ratagnon" for Grade 3, Category 2, captivated the judges, while Jenny A. Garcia showcased her talent with "Ang Aral ng Maliit" for Grade 2 and "Ang Paborito ni Sita" for Grade 3.

The ceremony was made more intimate with the addition of the Alab, a collective quiet moment by the fire, symbolizing the ignited journey of the writers and illustrators in the creation of their literary masterpieces.

The Reading Exhibit featured the traditional Open Mic Storytelling, providing a platform for participants to share their creative narratives. Additionally, the event marked the soft launching of the DepEd LR Portal for Kids app and the initiation of the Search for Most Functional School Libraries. The live display of characters from last edition's Sulyap for the masterpieces of Jose Rizal added a dynamic element to the exhibit.

The Storybook Recognition Rites, the centerpiece of the event, was graced by esteemed guests, including the Vice President of the Philippines and the Secretary of the Department of Education, Sara Z. Duterte. Winners from different regions were recognized across five categories, including Best Five Storybooks for Young Readers, Best Five Storybooks for Emergent Readers, Best Stories for Beginning Readers, Best Stories for Habit and Hobby Readers, and Best Stories for Young Readers and Young Writers. The awardees received plaques, medals, and cash prizes for their exceptional contributions.

The Gawad Teodora Alonso 2023, in its fifth edition, not only celebrated the exceptional talents of Filipino writers and illustrators but also emphasized the importance of nurturing a love for literature among young readers. With the successful culmination of this competition, the torch of literary excellence continues to burn brightly, inspiring future generations of storytellers and artists across the nation.
